Atonement. The word describes the setting “at one” of those who have been estranged, and denotes the reconciliation of man to God. Sin is the cause of the estrangement, and therefore the purpose of atonement is to correct or overcome the consequences of sin. ~Bible Dictionary
'The Atonement included His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and His suffering and death on the cross, and it ended with His Resurrection.-He submitted to the Father's will in a supreme expression of love for His Father and for us. This triumph of Jesus Christ over Spiritual death by His suffering and over physical death by His resurrection is called the Atonement.' ~Preach My Gospel
This means of Atonement is provided by the father, and is offered in the life and person of his son Jesus Christ.
